Pandemic
Pandemic: an outbreak of a disease that occurs over a wide geographic area and affects an exceptionally high proportion of the population.
So what do we actually have here? Definitely wide spread, definitely contagious to a high proportion of population as studies have shown. But when we say “affects” does that include those who never knew they had the virus because it did not “affect” them? And does it qualify as an exceptionally high proportion? And who are the most affected? Comparing this pandemic to others is helpful, as is separating rhetoric versus fact when analyzing the disease to critically think.
